Women Of Song
Abafazi Bengoma is an all-female band from South Africa that stands out for its powerful combination of music, culture, and activism. The band consists of nine talented women who not only sing but also play a variety of instruments such as drums, percussion, and marimba. Born and bred in some of the most challenging areas of South Africa, including Soweto, Alexandra, and the East Rand, these women have used their craft to raise awareness on various social issues while celebrating African culture. Initially known as Bassadi le Meropa, the group evolved from a six-member drumming ensemble to the full-fledged band it is today, known for blending drumming, dancing, singing, and acting with African indigenous instruments.
The band was born out of a drum circle jam in which six women passionate about drumming came together. Their collaboration grew into a band that not only performs but also seeks to break stereotypes, particularly the belief that women cannot work together or play traditionally male-dominated instruments like drums. Since its inception in 2017, Abafazi Bengoma has toured extensively, covering popular African songs and working with acclaimed artists both in South Africa and globally.
